@Steve, I completely agree that thats the best workflow. The word hacking in my post has no negative connotations at all.

"Most of the UI in our application was done by arranging MovieClips on stage and then gluing in the logic in FlexBuilder (or FDT in Gabo’s case)"

This is similar to the approach I often take as I mentioned on one of your earlier posts...

http://www.arpitonline.com/blog/2009/03/21/flex-builder-tip-use-swcs-for-image-assets-not-embed-metatags-for-pure-actionscript-projects/

I don't see it as "hacking" at all. It's just using a visual tool for the part its good for.

@TJ, I have updated the post changing the Flex 3 / Flex 4 comparison to the Spark vs. Halo architectures. While Fx4 does sometimes seem to be an awkward bridge between the old and the new way, at least what Spark enables seems to be forcing a lot of developers to rethink UI beyond the standard look and feel for controls.

Good post. It's amazing what we can learn from others when we are willing to step outside of our own box and examine what others do with an open mind.

"Good architecture enables better looking things (Look at Flex 4 compared to Flex 3)"

This is a bad analogy in my opinion. Flex 4 is like Flex 3.5 beta. The architecture is a hack in between what Flex 3 is and what Flex 4 SHOULD BE. It's not an elegant or beautiful solution and the architecture has a ways to go. The workflow has improved dramatically, but thats about it at the moment, and a big reason why many Flex developers aren't touching it for a while. Hopefully we will see a Flex 4.5 that resolves some of the less-than-trivial issues with the SDK.
