Announcing EspressoReader (alpha): A desktop client for Google Reader
I am excited to finally announce the alpha release of EspressoReader. EspressoReader, in its current incarnation, is a desktop app for Google Reader. However the goal is to create an application for managing all the information streams you read on a daily basis, and providing user interfaces that help sifting through all of that. For example, this release includes a PhotoView that lays out all the images in different feeds one below the other, which works out really well if you are subscribed to image heavy feeds like web comics.
You can download the application from here.
Update: I am removing the link to the installer as more and more people keep having a broken experience with version 1. Please get on the alpha list for version 2 at EspressoReader.com. The new system should be a lot more stable since it uses a different authentication system that seems to be working much better.
Features:
Multiple view support like Text, Images and Browser (more coming soon)
FullScreen support
Share with Twitter
Related entries from your other subscriptions
Features coming soon (almost done but couldn’t finish for this release):
Offline support / Prefetch support (allowing you to load all subscriptions for a category when reading an entry for more useful Related Feeds functionality)
Improved Related Feeds Algorithm
Other list of proposed features can be found here. Feel free to add to that list.
Also the application is completely charityware. Please consider donating to Unicef if you find this application useful.
EspressoReader was built completely with OpenPyro.
Espresso v2 is currently development is currently in full swing. If you are interested in a private alpha coming soon, please fill in the form below and we’ll let you know as soon as we are ready.
Closing the alpha sign up form. Thanks for everyone who signed up. Public alpha coming soon.

It’s so weired when running the app.
The UI opened but without any google news after setup my google account there.
I’m excited about this app but I’m afraid it doesn’t work for me. Upon first launch, it asked me to log in. After login nothing seemed to happen so I closed and re-opened the application. At that point, I get the empty frames with no feeds in them.
I can’t see the settings button. I’m in windows runing last version of espressoreader and also the latest air release. I see status online, but I recognice form the video of refreshingapps.com that the button to settings is missing in right bottom corner.
@gmmazza
Can you please send me a screenshot if you can upload it somewhere on the web. Also, try clicking on the “tweet” link on the top of the third column. That should bring up the settings window anyway (if the twitter username and password are not supplied)
here is the screenshot http://twitpic.com/1wa21
I already entered in the twitter section, and signed up to mi twitter acount, neverteless it didn’t show anything about login acount to google reader.
Ihave the same problem.
How do I configure my google reader account?
I can launch the app but it stays blank.
No configure buttom found.
Where do I put my google reader username?
I cant use the app.
@gmmazza
I am currently investigating that issue. This has been reported by a few other people. Will release a patched release soon.
Same problem – dont see any way to setup google reader account!
These are just the files…how do I install on AdobeAir? It’s not a user-friendly installer like most AdobeAir apps.
@Jacob,
Sorry about that. I have fixed the mime-type issues so it should download as a .air file correctly now.

Any word on this? I have been excited about the prospect of this app as well, and no luck. Blank. I use Google Apps, I don’t know if that makes any difference, but I can’t seem to configure it anywhere…
Sorry everyone. Until recently I hadnt even gotten this to replicate for any machines I could get access to. However thats started happening on one new machine I just installed safari4 on. I’ll try to see if I can fix this with a build soon.
I am sorry for this app not working as I hoped. The problem has been using Air’s handling of http cookies. Working on a fix soon
This is an amazing app.
Only thing that would make it better is support for larger font sizes? Any plans?
Thank you!
Are there keyboard shortcuts for the various: next/ previous feed and next/ previous item and to open an item in browser? If not that would be very nice!
@Mark
No such plans yet but I’ll add them to the backlog
@Derek
Those are in the backlog, just havent had too much time to work on this
It doesn’t show the dates that the feeds were made. I can see all my feeds but one such feed a follow its crucial to know the date and time it was posted. Is there a way to turn it on. Its not the original feed either because Google reader shows date and time.
I just installed and I can’t see a settings button either. Clicking “Tweet” only gives me settings for twitter. It has not asked me anywhere for my google login. The app is useless right now for me.

Cant see any feeds. Shame, looks good otherwise.
App looks great but it doesn’t seem to be working, I’m on Mac OSX 10.6.1 and it is unable to setup any accounts.
The application doesn’t working with actual AIR framework. The settings screen has null and we can’t add any feed settings.
App dosent work, after reading all the threads seems like the creators are not bothered to fix it. Seems to be an email/password collection utility.
